48 BC – Caesar's civil war: Battle of Pharsalus – Julius Caesar decisively defeated Pompey at Pharsalus and Pompey fled to Egypt.

1329 – Quilon, the first Indian Christian Diocese, was erected by Pope John XXII; the French-born Jordanus was appointed the first Bishop.

1965 – Singapore was expelled from Malaysia and becames the first and only country to date to gain independence unwillingly.
